Material Performance Evaluation of Cryogenically Treated Cemented Carbide Inserts
Abstract
The key challenges are to improve hardness and resistance to wear of the cutting tool. Subzero or cryogenic treatment can be used for enhancing mechanical as well as physical properties of the tool. In this work the cemented carbide insert is subjected to cryogenic treatment in Helium gas for different soaking periods as 10hr, 14hr and 18hr. Further an attempt has been made to quantify and confirm effect of different soaking/holding period along with mechanism responsible for improving the mechanical properties of tools such as hardness, microstructure, and grain size by Vickers hardness test and microstructural investigation. The primary results show that there is a significant increase in hardness and relative decrease in grainsize.
